Web-Site Costs and Pricing
There are several separate charges associated with setting up and maintaining a website. This outline will give you a general idea of what to expect.
Domain Name Registration
Your domain name, such as mycompany.com or mysite.net, is unique world-wide, and must be registered through one of the many domain registries. If the name you want has already been registered by someone else, you cannot use it. Once yours is registered, it is protected from use by anyone else unless you let it expire.
The Domain Registry is just an agency that handles licensing domain names. Although most of them will also handle email and provide website hosting for their domains, this is usually not cost effective.
In years past, most domains were registered through Network Solutions, now also known as Verisign, at a cost of $35/year. Other registries have much lower charges. We recommend and use Dotster, a reputable alternative that has been in business for many years. Their charges are:

You can transfer a domain registration to Dotster if it is currently registered with a different registry. The one year term transfer term begins with the expiration of your current term, so you do not lose any paid time by doing this.

Secure Server Certificate (optional)
If your site includes on-line shopping, or handles confidential information for any other reason, your hosting should take place on a secure server. All transactions on a secure server are protected by encryption, and confidential information such as credit card numbers and mailing addresses cannot be intercepted during transmission.

Domain Hosting
Once your domain name is registered, and a website has been designed, you must arrange for a company to host the site for you. The hosting service provides storage for the site and all of its files, and makes the site available to the Internet 24 hours a day. As part of their service, hosting organizations provide multiple email accounts, free email forwarding, website statistics, and so on, usually for an additional charge.
Although you may choose from a huge variety of hosting services, including national companies (Verizon, AT&T, Earthlink), the domain registries (Network Solutions, Dotster, and others) and local providers (JLC, MV Communications, etc. in New Hampshire), we recommend Aidan Internet Solutions. After working with several other hosting services over the years, we find that Aidan provides excellent, competent service at a very competitive price.
Robin Warren has no financial interest in Aidan Internet Solutions, and vice versa. I recommend Aidan based on the positive experiences our customers have enjoyed with them. A few of our customers have other hosting arrangements, and I have no objection to this.

Website Design
Robin Warren is in the business of designing websites. This usually consists of one or more of the following services:
- Creating multiple web pages.
- Suggesting a color scheme that will provide a consistent look throughout the site.
- Creating supporting graphics, including logos and navigation buttons.
- Fixing existing sites and pages so that they work properly in all browsers.
- Recommending appropriate services for hosting, domain registration, secure server certification, email support, data collection, on-line shopping, and so on.
- Maintaining product data for shopping cart use.
- Managing password access to restricted areas of the site, for e.g. members or employees only.
All of these services are charged at an hourly rate. Although it may sound high, rest assured that I accomplish a great deal in every billable hour! I can also work within an agreed to budget.
