I Did Not Lose a Friend Today

I did not lose a friend today,
       Our status still is quite the same.
There is no sorrow to allay;
       Between us friendship never came.

True friendship: whereof is it made,
       What binds it? Surely not the sands
Of loyalty that, once repaid,
       Is thought to wash it from our hands.

These sands of time are not the best
       That mutual feeling can enfold,
For petty qualms are but a test
       To purify them into gold.
