I Wondered: What Could She See

I wondered: What could she see in him?
(For I did not know him then as I do now.
I hadn't seen him playing with a child
Nor noticed how he looked at her all mild
That way, nor when he'd clasp her hand, how
He'd speak to her, his strong voice dim.)

But once I saw his visage reflected in her eyes
Great God, I said, is that the way she sees her mate?
What splendor she has added to his face.
Or can it be the rest of us, half blind,
Are not equipped to see what she can find.
To him the fortunate, the happy fate
To be transfigured in this wise.

Who can see all of us with that ennobling view?
If it be God, then God has angels, too.
